Power Infrastructure

Power infrastructure refers to the systems that provide the electrical power to sustain the community. This includes sources of power, methods of storing and distributing it, as well as ways to manage climate control.

Solar power is one of the most common sources of renewable energy for intentional communities. Installing solar panels is relatively easy and can provide a steady source of electricity.

Biogas for electricity is another great way to turn organic matter into energy. Biogas can be produced from animal waste or human sewage, which can then be used to run a generator and provide power.

Power can also be sourced from wind and microhydro systems. These systems are more complicated to install, but they can provide a reliable source of power if done correctly.

Storing power is another important part of setting up a power infrastructure. Batteries are the most common way to store electricity, but there are also ways of using gravity and fuel cells to store energy.

Finally, climate controls are necessary for most intentional communities and can be powered with electricity. Heating and cooling systems can be powered with solar or biogas energy, or passive water heating techniques can be used.
